Mr Cellan THOMAS

Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

Mr Thomas qualified initially as a dental surgeon in 1995 from Cardiff’s University Dental Hospital. Initially he worked within various maxillofacial units before returning to study medicine back at Cardiff University. Following qualifying as a medical doctor in 2004 he completed junior doctor posts in paediatrics, general surgery and medicine.

Mr Thomas then completed basic surgical training in general surgery, orthopaedics and emergency medicine before qualifying for higher surgical speciality training in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery. He completed his training with an interface head and neck fellowship involving plastic surgery, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery and maxillofacial surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. This enhanced his knowledge and ability to deliver advanced reconstructive techniques for head and neck defects following the removal of cancerous tumours.

Since September 2012 Mr Thomas has worked as a Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at the University Hospital of Wales where he specialises in head and neck cancer treatment and reconstruction. He also treats skin cancer, salivary gland disease and trauma of the face/neck and head. In addition to treating benign disease of the jaws, lumps and bumps of the mouth and face.

Mr Thomas is the cancer lead for Cardiff’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department as well as the trauma lead for facial trauma in the major trauma centre. He is a member of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and of the British Association of Head and Neck Oncology. He is also an Honoury Senior Clinical Lecturer at Cardiff University which involves the teaching of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery to both medical and dental students.

Mr Thomas has spent thousands of hours operating on patients doing highly complex procedure in an effort to save and enhance the lives of his patients. He is a highly respected surgeon not just within Wales but also within the UK. He has also been featured on the TV in a documentary made by the BBC where they spent time with Mr Thomas following the treatment journey of one of his cancer patients within the University Hospital of Wales.

Mr Thomas is a fluent Welsh-speaker and has three young children with his wife who is a General Medical Practitioner and spends his weekend supporting their various sporting commitments with local rugby and football teams as well as enjoying outdoor activities in the beautiful Welsh countryside.
