Dr Simms qualified from Cardiff University School of Dentistry in 2014 with First Class Honours. Oral Medicine was always her goal, having enjoyed this specialty of dentistry during her undergraduate studies. Following qualification, she completed Dental Foundation Training in Cardiff, followed by Dental Core Training posts in community dental clinics in South Wales as well as Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine posts at the University Dental Hospital in Cardiff. She then worked as a Senior House Officer in South Wales within the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Continuing towards achieving her goal of entering Oral Medicine specialty training, she undertook a Dental Core Training post in Oral Medicine in Cardiff, before securing her registrar post in Oral Medicine in 2018. During her training programme, Dr Simms worked in Cardiff and Bristol experiencing a broad range of Oral Medicine conditions and perfecting her skills. She is involved with the mentoring and teaching of junior Dental Surgeons as well as undergraduate dental students at the University Hospital in Cardiff which allows her to share her knowledge and passion for this complex field.

Dr Simms has been involved with reviewing papers for the World Workshop on Oral Medicine VIII which contributed to several scientific opinion papers. This role involves visits to the USA to places such as Memphis, Tennessee for International meetings and collaborations with colleagues from around the globe. Dr Simms has published in numerous scientific papers in the field of Oral Medicine. Melanie is an active member of the British and Irish Society for Oral Medicine, and has presented at numerous conferences, including at the American Academy of Oral Medicine annual conference.

Dr Simms has completed the prestigious Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Oral Medicine to grant her the title of a Specialist in the field of Oral Medicine. There are only a relative handful of Oral Medicine Specialists across the UK so we are very honoured to have her as part of our team and to be able to offer her highly skilled services to the good people of South Wales.

 

Dr Simms prides herself on her excellent chairside manner with a focus on making her patients feel comfortable and listened too as she works with them in an effort to try to deduce the cause of their presenting issue prior to engaging in a well thought out course of action.

 

Dr Simms loves to travel with her husband as well as enjoying walks in the beautiful Welsh countryside.
