Having your wisdom teeth removed is a common procedure. You can be any age and might need to have your wisdom teeth extracted. Removal of wisdom teeth is usually done via a surgical procedure and it is important that you take the time to recover properly and follow your surgeon’s advice. A key part of your recovery is maintaining a diet that supports your healing process.
At South Wales Specialist Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Centre in Cardiff, we often get asked what’s safe to eat after wisdom teeth removal. Here’s our expert guide to help you plan your meals after treatment.

The First Week: Stick to Liquids and Soft Foods
During the first week, go for soft, cool, and easy-to-swallow foods. Good choices include smooth soups, mashed potatoes, scrambled egg, jelly, plain yoghurt and mashed bananas. It’s important to never use a straw when drinking as this can make the site bleed. Always let food cool fully before eating in the hours after your surgery whilst you are still numb.
Week 2: Slowly Expanding Your Diet
Once the initial swelling has eased, you can begin adding foods with texture. Try soft porridge or oatmeal, soft pasta, ripe bananas, and well-cooked vegetables. Continue to avoid anything that’s crunchy or containing lots of bits/seeds.
Foods to Avoid While Healing
Steer clear of hard, crunchy or chewy foods like crisps, nuts, and crusty bread. Spicy or very hot meals can irritate your mouth. Chewy foods may dislodge blood clots needed for proper healing.
Top Tips for Eating Comfortably
Chew slowly and on the opposite side
Take smaller bites by eating with a teaspoon and avoid rushing
Allow all foods and drinks to cool down whilst you are still numb
Don’t use straws, as suction can disturb healing
Staying Hydrated Without Straws
Staying well hydrated is crucial for your recovery. Drink plenty of water slowly from a glass or bottle. Avoid fizzy or acidic drinks for at least three to four days.
Signs You're Ready to Reintroduce Normal Foods
You can resume eating normally once the swelling subsides and your mouth feels more comfortable. Start with soft dishes and gradually increase the texture.
